Field Trip

The students were in awe during the Jillian Jiggs performance at the Richmond Hill Performing Arts Center. The show wove together pieces of all of the Jillian Jiggs books. The children could easily relate to the performance. It was so much fun watching their aces during the show. They truly enjoyed watching actors on stage.

We suggest putting out some cardboard boxes this weekend and watching your child create items from the set.  What can your family make from a box?

Remembrance Day

Today the children took part in a Remembrance Day Assembly. They were very quiet and respectful during The Last Post, the two minutes of silence, as well as the readings. This morning they wrote thank you post cards to some veterans. The post cards will be delivered to our local retirement home for our local veterans. Please take some time to talk with your child about their experiences today.

Pre Show workshop

Later this month, our class will be going to the Richmond Hill Performing Arts centre to see a performance. The show will be based on books by the author Phoebe Gilman. We have been reading some of her stories. Our students are enjoying the main character, Jillian Jiggs. Today, we had a Pre-Show workshop in our classroom. Miss Bethany, a teaching artist led drama activities with our learners. Our students participated very well. They helped create and act out a story. They are ready and prepared for the upcoming interactive show.

Circle of trust

Today we had a guest teacher come into our room to work with our students. Mrs. Good led the class in discussions about personal space. She introduced the Circles mat. We talked with the children about how different people are in different circles of trust around us. Each of us has our own personal purple circle of space we need to feel comfortable. Other people we know and encounter in our lives fit in different circles. For example, a close family member would be in our blue circle which is the closest one to us. A community helper such as a police officer would be in our red circle of trust. The officer would be someone we could talk to and ask for help. At home, you could continue the discussions about personal space.

We are learning how to move around the classroom and yard safely. We are learning about ways others need their own personal space. We need to respect that some people do not like to have someone standing close to them. We discussed cuddles at home and how at school we need to provide each other space. Math opportunities

We had a fun and active Halloween day. Tonight many of the children will have buckets or bags filled with treats after a night of trick or treating. These treats provide a wonderful opportunity for authentic math learning. As the week goes on, you may wish to do some of the math activities with the treats.

Activities:

– sort the treats

-re-sort a group of treats, for example re-sort the chocolate pile into different kinds

-take ten treats and create a graph with the treats

-count all of the candies in a package of treats

-take two packages of treats and count how many treats are in each package. Discuss which one has more treats in the package.

-count the number of bags of chips

-discuss the groups of treats using the terms more or less

-survey people in the family and ask what type of treat is their favourite treat

-make patterns with the treats

Have fun learning with the goodies at home.
