Summer Safety

In class, we are reviewing ways to stay safe over the summer. We have discussed the need for helmets, sunblock, hats, and life jackets. We have read pattern books about summer safety. We viewed short clips about boat safety and the need for life jackets, as well as videos about helmet use in different activities.

We investigated the design and function of life jackets. We presented a challenge for students to make a life jacket for one of our plastic people. The extra challenges included ensuring the person floated, as well as trying to get the head of the person out of the water. The children could test their creations in a bucket of water. This was one challenge they enjoyed testing, adjusting and redesigning. There was a lot of laughter and surprises when the children saw their life jackets working.

National Aboriginal Day

Today we discussed National Aboriginal Day. We learned how lessons can be told through stories. We read Little Fly Saves the River. Some students talked about the lesson of saving water. They learned many animals need water to survive. Other children discussed the lesson that even little people or creatures can help solve problems. We can all work together to make the Earth a healthy place to live.

Crock a Doodle

We had a successful trip to Crock a Doodle today. Our students painted a picture of themselves. They took their time, and painted using the skills taught throughout the year. We reminded the children about brush strokes, as well as the amount of paint on their bushes. IMG_2685IMG_2686The students had the opportunity to look inside the Kiln. We look forward to having our finished products early next week.

Symmetry

We are revisiting symmetry. We learned about symmetry when we made hearts earlier in the year. Some students read about Butterflies and made symmetrical butterflies. This week we are exploring pattern blocks and coloured wheels. The children are creating beautiful symmetrical designs on their own. At home, point out objects that have symmetry.

Take some time to explore the wonderful resources our community and to offer.

Wind Spinners

The students are very interested in spinners. We are using this interest to investigate different types of spinners and movements. We are reading short patterns texts about spinners. We have viewed some clips about spinners and watched some procedures on how to make wind spinners. Today the children were delighted in their final wind spinners. There was a definite buzz in the room as they saw the way a paper plate could turn into a spinner.

Nests

Our Signs of Spring adventure included photos of bird nests and a spider nest. The photos generated conversations about nests. We read stories about birds. We read non fiction books about nests. We viewed video clips about birds making nests. We revisited our sewing inquiry from earlier in the year and talked about weaving and threading items for a nest.

The students made a plan and created their own bird nest. They discussed how they could fasten materials together. Many struggled to glue sticks together. They problem solved and began weaving the sticks together with yarn or pipe cleaners. It was interesting to watch the problem solving that happened throughout this investigation.
