The Big Crunch

Today our school participate in The Big Crunch. Every student had an apple and we all crunched at the same time.

It was so crunchy, one of our student lost a tooth. We couldn’t find the tooth in all of the excitement.

Turn out the lights

Has your child begun turning out the lights when they leave a room? Is your child talking about the Earth? In class,  we are reading stories about the Earth and viewing videos about Earth Hour. Saturday March 19th is Earth Hour. We hope families talk about ways to save electricity and possibily participate in Earth Hour. As a school we will observe Earth Hour after the March Break. We will continue our focus on the environment through the rest of the year.

Here is one of the videos we have viewed in class.

We are reading some books about the Earth and the food chain.

Our students are beginning to write about their thoughts about the Earth. Here are a few samples of writing from our Kindergarten learners.

We hope you continue the dialogue at home and talk about ways to use less electricity.

Bulb exploration

Today we looked at our Amaryllis  plants and talked about the life cycle of the plant. It is now time to cut off the leaves and leave the bulbs in a cool space. We also compared the tulips with the Amaryllis and a few students were surprised to discover tiny bulbs.  The children used scoops and magnifying glasses to explore the bulbs. As spring arrives shortly, you may wish to talk and point out to your children bulbs and flowers in your yard or neighbourhood.

Examining artwork

Today we read the picture book titled, Look! Look! Look! by Nancy Elisabeth Wallace. In the story the mice use frames to examine a piece of artwork. The students used frames and looked closely at four pieces of artwork. We discussed colours, lines, shapes and items we saw within the frames.

Later we asked each student to tell us which picture they preferred and why. Take some time to look at the four pictures below and talk with your child about which one they like best and why. Talk about your preferences as well. Have fun exploring art together.

2D and 3D artwork

Our students carefully planned and created 2D and 3D artwork over the past two weeks. Students applied their knowledge of shapes and created various pieces of artwork.

As as a class we looked at the artwork of Louise Nevelson and then created a giant sculpture together.

Here are photos of our class bulletin board.
